Our mission is to use AI scientists to automate and accelerate fundamental science that improves human health.
About us
FutureHouse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research lab based in San Francisco, CA.
We were founded in 2023 by Sam Rodriques and Andrew White.
Our vision is to build a research institute that pairs AI Scientists with exceptional human scientists to do science more efficiently than before. We aim to accelerate the pace of discovery and to provide world-wide access to cutting-edge scientific, medical, and engineering expertise.
One day of our AI Scientist can accomplish what human scientists accomplish in 6 months. A single researcher with our AI Scientist can accomplish what an entire team would accomplish previously. Edison Scientific, the commercial spinout of FutureHouse, is now bringing this technology to the world.

03. AI Science Assistant
AI Assistants are language model agents that can execute on specific scientific tasks (”search the literature for every example of X” or “analyze this single cell data to see Y”).
Many people are working on AI Assistants. Some are working on AI Assistants for science.

02. AI Scientist
We are building an AI Scientist.
The core of the AI Scientist is a loop that consists of building world models, generating hypotheses based on those world models, and then updating those world models in light of new data.

We will know that the AI Scientist has been built when humans can provide an AI system with a scientific quest and have it come up with hypotheses, conduct experiments, analyze the data, and write a paper on its findings.

We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit AI-for-science research lab in San Francisco. Our mission is to build an AI Scientist to automate and accelerate fundamental science that improves human health.
FutureHouse is funded through philanthropic partnerships and grants. Our first two years were made possible by Eric and Wendy Schmidt, and we have received additional support from OpenPhilanthropy, the National Science Foundation, and the AI Safety Institute, among others.
FutureHouse and Edison Scientific are two independent organizations. FutureHouse is a nonprofit focused on fundamental research for the public good. Edison Scientific is a for-profit company that commercializes AI tools for science. FutureHouse has access to Edison's technology. The two organizations share office space but have separate missions, operations, and governance.
The AI systems originally developed under the FutureHouse name are now part of Edison Scientific's platform.
