Co-Advise a Fellow

FutureHouse invites faculty at academic research institutions around the world to collaborate with us as co-advisors for FutureHouse Fellows.

Fellows are selected through our competitive application process. As part of the program, they pursue independent, AI-enabled research projects that address ambitious scientific challenges. Co-advisors provide scientific mentorship, help Fellows connect with relevant academic communities, and support access to lab or institutional resources.

In return, co-advisors have the opportunity to work with a FutureHouse-supported Fellow conducting research that aligns with their scientific interests, without being expected to provide salary support or Fellowship funding.

If you choose to list your name on our website, you may be contacted by potential applicants interested in working with you. Please note that we do not coordinate matching between applicants and co-advisors.

Expectations

What You'll Do

Co-advisors support selected Fellows by providing scientific mentorship and access to their institutions. This may include:

  • Advising on the Fellow’s scientific direction
  • Connecting the Fellow with relevant expertise, collaborators, or lab resources
  • Providing a visiting appointment or equivalent affiliation that enables access to the co-advisor’s institution and lab

Fellows may work with one or more co-advisors, depending on the needs of their project.

Logistics

Application Requirements

We strongly encourage applicants to have one or more academic co-advisors who can support their scientific agenda. Applicants may work with the co-advisor(s) who are the best fit for their project, whether or not those faculty are listed on the FutureHouse website.

If an applicant names you as a proposed co-advisor, you will be asked to provide a letter of support. If multiple co-advisors are proposed, each must submit a separate letter. Your letter should confirm:

  • Support for the proposed research project
  • Willingness to advise the applicant if selected
  • Ability to help provide an appropriate institutional affiliation and access to relevant resources

If you are also the applicant’s current advisor, you may submit one letter that serves as both the co-advisor letter of support and a recommendation.

Co-advisor institutions are not expected to provide salary support or project funding. FutureHouse pays Fellows’ stipends and covers project-related research expenses. In most cases, this arrangement should not require an agreement between FutureHouse and your institution before an applicant is selected. After selection and before the Fellowship begins, we expect to work with your institution on any necessary collaboration agreement, including terms related to project-related intellectual property. Project-related IP is typically retained by the co-advisor’s institution.
